Curtis Martez Booker was born on February 15, 1992 to Angie Tapp-McGee and Curtis Moses Booker Sr. at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Unfortunately, Curtis never had a relationship with his biological father. However, he was blessed to have a wonderful step-father that came into his life when he was three years old: Timothy McGee.
Raised in an Christian home with musically talented parents, it’s not by coincidence that Curtis would have a passion for music as well. His father, Timothy, is a gospel artist and choir instructor, and his mother sings in the church choir as well. Curtis states that both of his parents are dedicated to honoring God and the same biblical principals were instilled in him.
“The impatient idealist says: ‘Give me a place to stand and I shall move the earth.’ But such a place does not exist. We all have to stand on the earth itself and go with her at her pace.” -Chinua Achebe
As a young child growing up in Texas, Curtis felt the need to look out for himself and to help his family in the face of hardships. After a decade of street life and drug dealing, one ordinary night in 2012 took a turn for the worst. Curtis was shot twice: once in the head and once in the shoulder.
“At the hospital the doctor explained to me that the chances of my injuries impact were 1 in a million, and there was nothing he could do to save me! I knew I wasn’t destined to an ordinary lifestyle. I desired the greater things that life had to offer for me and my siblings. I wanted to see my people flourish.”
With God’s grace and an impeccable will, Curtis miraculously recovered. The severity of the injury led to the inability of Curtis turning his head left or right in the hospital. The brace locked Curtis’s head in one direction: upwards.
“It was an opportunity to change my life. Call it a second chance. I praise God for sparing my life. From that incident onwards, I let myself be known to the world as H3: Head Held High.”
In 2013 Curtis Martez Booker adapted the moniker of H3, Head Held High, and began to write and record inspirational music. By weaving his personal experiences and acute wisdom into his work, H3 is inspiring and uplifting souls all across the world.
